    Last summer the NRC released A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas, which describes a vision for science education and three dimensions critical to that vision. In this webinar, we will explore the framework and dimensions -- especially the scientific and engineering practices -- and discuss how they can be integrated into the education of new teachers and professional development for current teachers.

    • Brian Reiser (invited), member of the committee that developed the framework, and professor of learning sciences, School of Education and Social Policy, Northwestern University

    • Heidi Schweingruber, co-director of the project to develop the framework, and deputy director, Board on Science Education, National Research Council

    • Deb Smith, member of the committee that developed the framework, and assistant professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Pennsylvania State University

  • As part of our affiliation with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE) has been allocated up to two hours of program space at each of the 2012 NSTA Regional Conferences (Louisville, KY (October 18-20; Atlanta, GA (November 1-3); Phoenix, AZ (December 6-8) and up to ten hours at the 2013 NSTA National Convention (San Antonio, TX, April 11-14, 2013) to present the work of ASTE members.

    I strongly encourage ASTE members to submit proposals to share their scholarship with members of the larger NSTA community. Please follow the attached proposal submission guidelines and submit your proposal for review to John Tillotson (jwtillot@syr.edu) by January 30, 2012.

    We invite proposals for Pardee symposia, topical sessions, special sessions, and short courses for the 2012 GSA meeting in Charlotte. We aim to develop a meeting that showcases the importance of investing in the geological sciences, both today and in the future. We are particularly interested in receiving symposia, session proposals, and workshops that highlight relevant geoscience education research at the K-16 level. This is your opportunity to showcase your work to a national and international audience and learn from others in the process!

    Financial incentives are available for meeting attendees, especially those in K-12 geoscience education.

    TECHNICAL SESSIONS
    Deadline: Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 [ see link above for proposal form ]

    Help ensure that your area of geoscience education research and expertise is represented in next year's technical program. Individuals, groups, and geosciences organization are welcome to suggest topics and submit proposals for both Topical Sessions and Pardee Keynote Symposia.

    Pardee Symposia are high-profile sessions on significant scientific developments, with invited speakers only. Topical Sessions are a combination of invited and volunteered papers. Unique formats are allowed, but they must be outlined in the proposal, along with the technical support needs. Sessions that promote discussion are encouraged.

    SHORT COURSES
    Deadline: Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

    Have something that your peers need to know? Then lead a Short Course at the 2012 GSA Annual Meeting in Charlotte!

    Proposals for Short Courses are now being accepted via Dr. Andy Bobyarchick (arbobyar@uncc.edu). Courses can be run to develop professional, teaching, and research skills at all levels.

  • ASTE ELECTION RESULTS

    The 2011 election process has concluded and the Election Committee would like to announce the new ASTE officers for 2012.

    *The 2011 Board Member at Large run-off election process has concluded and the Election Committee would like to announce that Nathan "Nate" Carnes will be joining the ASTE Board for a three year term starting this January, 2012.

  • A message from Randy Bell, ASTE President
    We are saddened to report that Hedy Moscovici passed away this past Friday night (11/4/2011). 

    I know that many of you were close to Hedy and that all of us were impacted by her generous spirit and service to ASTE. For me, it was during our overlapping terms as ASTE board members that I got to know Hedy best. I was always impressed with her efforts to broaden the perspective of the ASTE Board as we worked to serve the needs of the entire membership. Hedy served with wisdom, integrity, and copious amounts of enthusiasm, and it’s these aspects of her character and spirt that will occupy my thoughts in this time of loss. 

    In regard to memorials, I am able to share that her funeral service is scheduled for 2pm on Tuesday, November, 8th 2011 at:
